I love creating things; I use that creativity to make items for use in the classroom. I hope you find an idea or two while here. I believe our students should be learning to use technology, use it safely, and use it to enhance their learning. Technology will never replace good teaching. Don’t get me wrong, coding sites, activities, and robots are available all year long. The Learning Resources mice and Botley are great to teach beginning coding. I tell them we have other options for simple coding and DASH is not a remote control. You must code!<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p><p class="p2" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15px;"><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6werTgAeyyo8DZ3oYIT8OP2fyw9Vqbnt9r11KvUZGKtK2yWX7dHD8LRCOsl5xgFRC8WxyU5_lwxiTncpMMZNBs_RPwagck5pOZ2EIU9ZUXFAQGYg84kaGFW1OL0teNunUQX81tR6SIYaZb6AZkcEowQ38o0cd8iA4herR_MzXADzQaBxSnL_W_OmoSw/s530/EL13675-main-530Wx530H.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="530" data-original-width="530" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6werTgAeyyo8DZ3oYIT8OP2fyw9Vqbnt9r11KvUZGKtK2yWX7dHD8LRCOsl5xgFRC8WxyU5_lwxiTncpMMZNBs_RPwagck5pOZ2EIU9ZUXFAQGYg84kaGFW1OL0teNunUQX81tR6SIYaZb6AZkcEowQ38o0cd8iA4herR_MzXADzQaBxSnL_W_OmoSw/w200-h200/EL13675-main-530Wx530H.jpeg" width="200" /></a></div><p class="p2" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15px;"><br /></p><p class="p3" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">The free play is perfect for all my learners. This way I know what to expect the screen to look like, where on the screen to find the information, what button to push, and what action might happen. </p><p>When I am training, I use the same technique. I like to make presentations for the learners with visuals and step by step instructions. Here is a sample I made for my students. I have done this for trainings I have done with other teachers. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxtDaSwLfUva4QoM36qjUP5EEPS1khi-EtYnpV8R_QwJvc2P5OyuS0cpUvtiHRBHT3mDnm_vCAaGU_oHu4BJA' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br /><p><br /></p>Teaching Under the Sunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09630560150826639279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2486962328391404204.post-1280353429391031502022-04-07T17:42:00.004-04:002022-04-07T17:42:27.077-04:00Snippet Videos<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirO-4S0v4KUduSHDm14YufxXAsNUXDBNFIDqXH4WofCqP5Uugtb8xmMuihNP-mXNGrSnungl_GBV8Vhxumjif8KK2pY2p6E1KOVQU_sSocb8Z2L-AJg54wHrH_-si8feziEGZNgD6bZvCm8I0N8aCFJOVQE8yq5KnYuGDVBZJQYBOrThFApD6Hz1F90w/s1811/laptop-3190194%20edit.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1105" data-original-width="1811" height="195" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirO-4S0v4KUduSHDm14YufxXAsNUXDBNFIDqXH4WofCqP5Uugtb8xmMuihNP-mXNGrSnungl_GBV8Vhxumjif8KK2pY2p6E1KOVQU_sSocb8Z2L-AJg54wHrH_-si8feziEGZNgD6bZvCm8I0N8aCFJOVQE8yq5KnYuGDVBZJQYBOrThFApD6Hz1F90w/s320/laptop-3190194%20edit.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p>During remote and hybrid learning I got asked questions about our educational software by parents and teachers. But thanks to working remote, we can apply for anything. We can be coders, trainers, customer success managers, recruiters, and more. I could list the plethora of corporate job titles but you see my point. <span style="font-weight: normal;">What do you need for a quality Distance learning Space? Whatever works for you. A dedicated space, learning posters, chart stands, and a light ring? Go for it. A spot at the dining room table? Right on. The coffee table, patio table, where ever I can find a quiet spot? Again, no wrong answers here.</span><br />
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span><span style="font-weight: normal;">So to keep it real; I present to you: The Help Desk, Media Center, and LIbrarian's Office.</span><span style="font-weight: normal;">My primary role is to provide technical support for teachers and students. I have renamed my desk the help desk. As you see, two monitors are always required. I took over my daughters old armoire. I love how the camera angle omits the bed that is directly behind my chair.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> S</span>ince we bought the armoire when she was in middle school, it doesn’t have the best lighting all around. It meets my needs. The best thing is, at the end of the day I can shut the doors and close my office.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></span><br />

I am still holding library classes- putting together resources, books, and Maker-space suggestions in my Google classroom. While I do read aloud‘s during my live meeting each day, I wanted to be able to post stories for them to listen to any time. The space in front of the window is perfect as it is a nice little reading nook. I am able to stretch a green screen behind me if I want to change the background. In the afternoon I get nice sunlight in the window.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></div>

Please note my fancy recording equipment. I use the Touchcast app on the iPad for record cording and do any green screen editing in Doink. From San Diego in my early 20s to visit my grandparents, San Francisco multiple times, wine country and the redwoods, Orange County, and Disneyland.</span><br />
<div class="p1" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; font-size: 17.9px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 21.4px;">

<span class="s1" style="font-size: 17.94px;">Michael and I usually don’t revisit destinations as we have so many that we want to visit. Wine Country is an exception. We returned in 2015 as empty nesters. We stayed in Calistoga and found some of our favorite wines. But this isn’t about the wine.</span></div>

<span class="s1" style="font-size: 17.94px;">During this visit, we flew down to Irvine to visit a friend and see southern California. Michael rented a motorcycle so he could ride with Leo. While I joined them one day, that was enough for me. I rented a car and headed up to LA for a day. </span></div>

Then I started drinking hot tea and I had a few mugs. But my friends all enjoyed Starbucks. So when visiting friends I would go into Starbucks. And I noticed the travel collection. So hard to pick today’s mug., each one is a memory! I think I’ll start with Boston. While it was the most recently acquired, it has the strongest ties to me.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> M</span>y daughter Amelia and her husband James now live in Boston. As I enjoy my tea this morning I’ll be thinking of them.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></div>

My good friend, Wendy, her oldest daughter, and I did a college road trip last summer. Her daughter wanted to visit Harvard and Boston University as part of the trip. We made our way to Boston did the college tours, and visited many other tourist stops in Boston. What an amazing city, the history and the vibe. Love! It was on that trip that I acquired the Boston mug. You will hear more about that trip as several other mugs were purchased. On a side note, my friends daughter was excepted into Boston university and will be attending there this fall. Hopefully not just as a virtual student by then.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></div>

Now a little about my morning tea. This is my tea station, I keep my three types out at all times, Palm Court for the morning, decaf for the evenings, and a pomegranate for afternoons (which I mix with black tea). As for the FunkPops- I considerd Strawberry Shortcake and Bellatrix to be great exapmles of my personalities, and John Snow- no explanation needed. </div>

I order my loose leaf teas from <a href="http://teaembassy.com/" target="_blank">Tea embassy</a> in Austin Texas. I order the Palm Court blend for every day. If you are looking for looseleaf teas, I highly recommend Tea Embassy.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> The service is great, they always add a personal touch, and they carry a wide varieties of tea. </span></div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Welcome to Tea With Me. Over the next few weeks I’m going to be sharing my morning tea with you. Since I am at home, I can enjoy my tea is a real mug, not the stainless steel insulated model I use at school. I will be featuring the mugs I have collected on my various travels. Most come with the story.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR3P-TeIb02SDbE7c_4fzNb09j9bMhdHCplqwZ_SQVGbOdVABp-4lJPYnYMTgWmsfhxzEY6i7ZbLvZvLXieVgyGbOYqaf-x6WjnBFcbcug9K8Fp4iSF8Dzwn4pYcndIiKzaECBj5vYUW8u/s1600/mug1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR3P-TeIb02SDbE7c_4fzNb09j9bMhdHCplqwZ_SQVGbOdVABp-4lJPYnYMTgWmsfhxzEY6i7ZbLvZvLXieVgyGbOYqaf-x6WjnBFcbcug9K8Fp4iSF8Dzwn4pYcndIiKzaECBj5vYUW8u/s320/mug1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Today’s mug is my favorite. It is Bellatrix Lestrange. I admit she is probably my favorite villain. Maybe it’s the actress. Maybe it’s the storyline. Maybe it’s because I can relate to the wild and untamed curly hair!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is the mug I use every day when I have time to sit at home and enjoy my tea. It is oversized, so no need for a refill. It is a think ceramic, so it keeps my tea warm for a long enough time. It is just perfect. I promised a story. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I originally bought this while visiting Universal Studios in Orlando. I had it for a couple of years when we had a hurricane in Florida. The short story is my friends were stuck on a cruise and their two daughters were here.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My husband went to get them a paper towel in the kitchen. I heard a very distinctive crash on the floor. Ceramic hitting tile is a sound all of its own. I knew what happened. I had no doubt. Yes, Bellatrix had fallen to the floor and was broken. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Fortunately my daughter worked at one of the Universal resort hotels. She had access to the parks. Because you can’t buy this mug at the Universal Store on CityWalk. No, you have to visit Diagon Alley at Universal Studios.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> Which I love to do, but that would be an expensive mug. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-converted-space"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ7Lf03L_b482nqVhwi8acgf3Jy2LS1m0-QX-5Wavb4haZ3JzcKOhBcHxOicP1ffTH6O2oKfmnWtdEOIEFURGwcqvE7-OU7Z3Tg2hWLgda9qeTIrtvacl7rW2VWYEMyKmm5y3tFbKe-ATB/s1600/mug3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ7Lf03L_b482nqVhwi8acgf3Jy2LS1m0-QX-5Wavb4haZ3JzcKOhBcHxOicP1ffTH6O2oKfmnWtdEOIEFURGwcqvE7-OU7Z3Tg2hWLgda9qeTIrtvacl7rW2VWYEMyKmm5y3tFbKe-ATB/s320/mug3.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-converted-space"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Needless to say I am very careful with my mug now. I keep it on my tea station when I am not using it. The tea station is on the counter, but farther away from the paper towels. I’d have to go back myself if it ever broke again.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

Don't tell my administrator, I don't always plan my lessons two weeks in advance. Sometimes I look for a book and that is what I read for the next week. So.....<br />
<br />
I was looking at the <a href="https://www.floridamediaed.org/ssyra-jr.html" target="_blank">Sunshine State Young Readers Award Jr</a>. book display to determine what books I haven't read yet. <u><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Inky-Octopus-Bound-Erin-Guendelsberger/dp/1492654140/ref=pd_sbs_14_3/143-2782823-7505308?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=1492654140&pd_rd_r=caff6700-e46f-4139-ad39-f45f5df66db7&pd_rd_w=MDazV&pd_rd_wg=xrEgd&pf_rd_p=7cd8f929-4345-4bf2-a554-7d7588b3dd5f&pf_rd_r=P75TSY45Z89TVREKMDQ4&psc=1&refRID=P75TSY45Z89TVREKMDQ4" target="_blank">Inky the Octopus</a></u> by <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "amazon ember" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Erin Guendelsberger </span>caught my eye. I have shown my students videos of an octopus escaping a tank; this book is the perfect addition to that lesson.<br />
<br />
Inky escaped from the National Aquarium in New Zealand. This book is a fictional account of what might have happened on his journey to the ocean.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="595" data-original-width="600" height="317" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgilCM2Q3GshCtB0e1CuzIRxDhqmpp1nvOLkIXR1gLv40-wtvnhIHIt4uUFz3bkM0ZtpCWHFL4uBqtZ-OxNufOqF662Wrx-y_SxBn9tRilnk-x7nexZJ6Wsqg3Aqo1nkeRbTQFKwDBqXlGI/s320/Screen+Shot+2020-02-17+at+7.12.36+AM.png" width="320" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started with a third grade class. They were full of skepticism, commenting that the story cannot be real. Cue the YouTube videos. Fact: if you start watching animal videos with 8/9 year olds, they don't want to stop. </div>
<br />
<br />
Later that day, I needed to pull books for Kindergarten to choose from for check out. I let them choose from a book cart with about 50 books so it is less overwhelming. As I was looking for books, <u><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Octopus-Alone-Divya-Srinivasan/dp/0670785156/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=octopus+alone&qid=1581941420&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Octopus Alone</a></u>, by <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Divya Srinivasan jumped into my hand.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_lNeQvVJWu3SKALJIklSoxX2KP_1g7JcWPZILsVjacgw_5BAUqgQA15jurRtw3FUqKtel2-s2sS-4iYs_nHGexbsUyTkHx9R-BdeIotSMJ7n78Cnf7yRkVYHzvKP2ILyb74NIjy9CapJk/s1600/Screen+Shot+2020-02-17+at+7.11.06+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="454" data-original-width="501" height="289" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_lNeQvVJWu3SKALJIklSoxX2KP_1g7JcWPZILsVjacgw_5BAUqgQA15jurRtw3FUqKtel2-s2sS-4iYs_nHGexbsUyTkHx9R-BdeIotSMJ7n78Cnf7yRkVYHzvKP2ILyb74NIjy9CapJk/s320/Screen+Shot+2020-02-17+at+7.11.06+AM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My first thought was to read it as a companion book to Inky, but then I read it. WOW! This book needs its own lesson. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When the seahorses come to play with the octopus, she enjoys watching them, but she doesn't want</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
to play with them. She escapes to the open ocean where she is able to play and sleep. Finally, she</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
realizes she misses the seahorses and she returns home. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The story of a shy octopus who needs time alone. I immediately identified with the character and knew the students would as well. It is perfect to show children that being shy and being alone is perfectly fine. Some people prefer to spend time alone, and that is okay. Some people are shy and will join a group when ready, and that is okay. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The illustrations are delightful; which adds to the beauty of the story. During the read aloud I talked to the children about feelings. Is it okay to be alone? Is it okay not to play? I hope the book and discussion help the students feel more comfortable if they are the shy type and more understanding of their friends if they are not. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I was able to transition from the classroom to the library. Me, a librarian, media specialist, teacher librarian... whatever title you want to use. It was a career move I had been interested in for a few years.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCuhoKmQ2p41mcQ50_I2-0XUhb5cMf1xD20KVw2v23d-YRy-e3gEBcePb_P99ix1uF39e3CUT4Sygacrrwn7Gz_5mNLIoMiBk65C8hezaavybl1OozLuCmZxdQfQIUgodPxTDEgLiYrOyQ/s1600/ECA57B77-C31D-4160-8B67-A3AA6721A4EE.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCuhoKmQ2p41mcQ50_I2-0XUhb5cMf1xD20KVw2v23d-YRy-e3gEBcePb_P99ix1uF39e3CUT4Sygacrrwn7Gz_5mNLIoMiBk65C8hezaavybl1OozLuCmZxdQfQIUgodPxTDEgLiYrOyQ/s320/ECA57B77-C31D-4160-8B67-A3AA6721A4EE.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The position allows me to teach all the students. I see students from each grade level daily for library lessons, book check out, and digital literacy skills. This is my time to instill a love of books to the students. I love seeing a student when they make a connection to a book. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also get to use Maker Space activities and computers to build thinking, problem solving skills, imagination, and creativity in the students. This time lets me connect to the students during nonacademic activities. I enjoy seeing the creativity they have with blocks, legos, or play dough.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also have office responsibilities. I have book and technology budgets. I plan and run two books fairs. I produce a daily news show with the students. This part of the job allows me to use the other part of my brain. The job offers me the chance to use a lot of different skills.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But the best part..... the BOOKS!!! Books I get to read. Books I get to order. Books that make you laugh or cry or sigh or just be. I love the books. I am reading more juvenile chapter books, but picture books are still my absolute favorite. I will be sharing my favorite books here. Hint, 90% of them are my favorite. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
P.S. the other best part..... walking around campus and having the students give me hugs, say hello, and hearing from their teachers that the students love the library. </div>
<div>

Raise your hand if you use iPods or iPads in your classroom. They are wonderful devices and there are more than enough apps to support and engage students in learning. Most of our students come to school with plenty of experience with some type of device; Apple or Android. That can be a good thing or a bad thing. </div>

It's good because they know how to turn on the device, open the app, and they know the finger gestures to work the apps.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's bad because they know how to work the device. They know how to open apps, close apps, they accidentally delete apps, they know the symbol for the camera and how to use it. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There is a time and place for them to use the camera or the video and the microphone. But when they are in the center it is nice to know they're working on what you want them to. Apple devices have a restriction that allow you to do this. It's called guided access. It is easy to set up.</div>

What is screen time? How much is too much? How young is too young for screen time?<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As a classroom teacher I think about screen time when planning my lessons. How can I teach computer skills and use technology without having students looking at a screen for too long? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let's start with my philosophy on technology in the classroom. Technology should not be used to 'teach' a topic. Technology should be used to enhance the teaching. What does that mean? Instead of using a site or and app to teach skills, I use technology to teach, and teach computer skills at the same time. I use the <a href="https://www.schrockguide.net/samr.html" target="_blank">SAMR</a> model as a guide to evaluate how I am using the technology.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcRXuTD4-Adp4fLwJ0ro3EyrPA8vss2gfichCAOGy7fr7RltZSEXtL4qCtSeDkSpi8En-fddMpaeDsAUnsanfxaXtuy2Y7Q3FXaDBuLV-cX6Voe3LgTg8U88J6zAbjYhYozH0TSdVbtjL1/s1600/smar.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="195" data-original-width="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcRXuTD4-Adp4fLwJ0ro3EyrPA8vss2gfichCAOGy7fr7RltZSEXtL4qCtSeDkSpi8En-fddMpaeDsAUnsanfxaXtuy2Y7Q3FXaDBuLV-cX6Voe3LgTg8U88J6zAbjYhYozH0TSdVbtjL1/s1600/smar.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And this is where my struggle with screen time begins. There are certain programs teacher must use in the classroom and these often have a time requirement, sometimes up to 90+ minutes a week. That is a lot of screen time on a substitution level program. Since I try to limit screen time in the classroom, I have to work around these requirements. How did I do that?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. I am 1:1 with laptops. I carve out a 20 minute block of time that is for these programs. All the students work on the program they need during this time. I try to do this first thing so that the students get a break from the screen before we use it later. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. I don't always use a device in the learning centers. If I plan a lesson using the devices, they aren't used in the learning centers. EPIC! Books is a great alternative for students who need support during independent reading. But if a student has already been using a device, they need a break from the screen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Planning! I l try to look at my lesson or activity using a device and make sure it is more than a substitution by asking a few questions: Is a device the best way to teach this? Am I teaching other computer skills at the same time? Am I using the device because I need a break? I use Google Slides a lot. For a lesson on shapes, students can learn to use the shapes drawing tool at the same time they are learning the shapes. The students are getting a math skill, shapes, and a computer skill, drawing tools, at the same time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Some days we don't use the devices at all. Yes, there are days when we don't use our laptops. Yup, I admit it. Some days the laptops stay on the cart, all day, resting those young eyes! It is just an important. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Primary Students Can USE Technology!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLpcF4BJEax9MP3pTvnIs_-iI1Ss9QKP7zLckqyt3r3NjfXYQaaH5ahwtqHuV1aa7vn8njhPWIdWfx0UXMW9hJyIP73IyKtstnkJUQ3w6NymUdYe_3jmN65gJ8y1DO0ABn5x866LOW-yYD/s1600/laptop-154091_1280.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLpcF4BJEax9MP3pTvnIs_-iI1Ss9QKP7zLckqyt3r3NjfXYQaaH5ahwtqHuV1aa7vn8njhPWIdWfx0UXMW9hJyIP73IyKtstnkJUQ3w6NymUdYe_3jmN65gJ8y1DO0ABn5x866LOW-yYD/s320/laptop-154091_1280.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Four years ago this district started a one to one laptop program. Teachers have to apply to get the cart. At the time I was teaching Kindergarten. I don't think very many people expected me to get the cart. But I did! I am teaching first grade now and every day they prove what I felt: Primary students CAN use technology!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then came all the concerns:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They can't use a trackpad</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They can't log in themselves, this districts uses a password that requires numbers and letters (at least one uppercase)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They will drop them</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They will color, write, draw, etc... on them</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They can't do it</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will share how I addressed these concerns in my classroom. I should also add, my school is high poverty, they don't have computers at home. It is also high ELL, with over 75% being dual language learners. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let's start with getting a laptop each day. They are stored on a cart and have to be plugged in to charge each night.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Organization: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is key to the laptop use. I give my students a number, 1-18, and put it on their name tag. Each laptop has the number on the top, in a nice paint pen or chalk pen. The trays in the charging cart also have a number. My students use the same computer every day. They know where to find and where to put the laptop away. Bonus: The network will cache the profile meaning the daily login goes a little faster. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The laptops stay on the desks. I have 4 desks pushed together, so the laptops go in the middle; leaving plenty of room to work. The students get their own laptop from the cart each morning. In the afternoon, the helpers for the day put the laptops away. It is less crowded around the cart. fewer students in one spot = less chaos. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They know the plug isn't in all the way if the charging light doesn't come on. It is a great visual clue for them, and something they would pick up themselves. They are already learning to troubleshoot technology problems. </div>

We will get the occasional cold front and might see lows in the 40s. Rarely does it freeze in the area.<br />
<br />
How do you teach about snow to children who rarely experience winter temperatures, let alone see snow?<br />
<br />
Of course the first step is to read books, fiction and nonfiction books about Snow. Some of my favorites include:<br />
<u>Snowballs</u> by Lois Ehlert, <u>The Snowy Day</u> by Ezra Jack Keats, and <u>The Biggest, Best Snowman</u> by Margery Cuyler.<br />

<br />
I use YouTube videos as well. My favorite are time lapse videos that show accumulation.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://youtu.be/2gYcXkpb6Zk" target="_blank"> Four Feet of Snow Time Lapse (43 seconds) </a><br />
<br />
<a href="https://youtu.be/enNy3kwQApc" target="_blank">Snowfall time lapse and clean up (3:42)</a> This one give them a good visuals of shoveling, cars making tracks and snow covering the tracks.<br />
<br />
We can't see snow videos without seeing some snowplows.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://youtu.be/5oa8P3HJhYw" target="_blank">Kids Truck Video- Snow Plow (2:49)</a><br />
<br />
Finally, we have to watch kids play in the snow.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://youtu.be/1I3ttj6SARI" target="_blank">The kids playing in the snow (3:47)</a><br />
<br />
I want the students to get a feel for snow. I also like quick, easy, and cheap recipes. I cannot say where I found the idea for shaving cream and baking soda, but it is my favorite recipe for snow. At the right consistency, the students can build a snowman. It is also cold to the touch. My students always comment on that when they touch it for the first time.<br />
<br />
Here is my simple recipe:<br />
1 can Barbasol shaving cream<br />
32 oz of baking soda<br />
<br />
Dispense all the shaving cream into a plastic container with a lid. Slowly add baking soda until the mix is not running and holds a ball shape. You just have to eyeball this. Let the mixture sit for at least an hour before the students explore.<br />
<br />
This amount makes divides into 4 nice piles of snow for the students to explore. I let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes between groups. As you play in the snow, the heat from your hands will 'use' up the shaving cream. Letting it sit helps the mixture become fluffy again.<br />
<br />
I put out shapes and toys for the students to make tracks and designs. Most want to build a snowman. The kids enjoy getting to play in the 'snow' and I feel like they get a realistic feel for snow without having to leave south Florida.<br />
